Why is Vinyl Siding Making A Comeback?

Jim asks: Why is Vinyl Siding Making A Comeback

Vinyl siding used to have a really bad reputation back in the 70s and 80s. It had a tendency to crack and discolor over time and of course, a lot of people thought it didn’t look all that great to begin with. It’s been a long time since the 70s and vinyl siding and things have really changed over the past few decades. The materials used are far better and modern vinyl siding doesn’t have these problems anymore. In fact, vinyl has been coming back in a big way and you’ll see that it’s now an option offered by all of the best siding companies.

There are a lot of advantages that vinyl offers compared to other materials. For starters, vinyl siding is incredibly easy to maintain. Unlike some other types of siding, it can be cleaned with a power washer and that’s just about the only regular maintenance it needs. It also can’t become a home to insects as is the case with wood siding; and of course, termites won’t eat your vinyl siding either.

How does it stack up in the durability department? Very well, as it happens. The modern vinyl siding companies offer is made from a combination of PVC resin and acrylic compounds to create a tough, dent resistant material which can stand up to the Midwest’s extreme weather. Newer siding also features compounds which prevent color from fading in the sun, so unlike wood and other materials which can fade over time, high quality vinyl siding will look just as good 10 years from now as the day it was installed.

Another reason that vinyl has managed to come back into favor is its price: as much as 50% less than some other options while offering comparable or better durability. Along with the great look of modern vinyl siding and the minimal maintenance it takes to keep it in good condition, it’s not at all surprising that Midwest siding companies are not only offering vinyl as an option, but actually recommending it to customers.

If your frame of reference for vinyl siding is your childhood memories of siding which just didn’t look great even when it was brand new and cracked and faded in just a few years, it’s time that you reexamined vinyl as an option. The high quality PVC siding available today is an entirely different thing and once you see it for yourself, you may be surprised by just how well it performs and how great it can look on your home.
